Violent antisemitic incidents worldwide rose 33% in 2023, on the count the Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism published with the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency for Israel in the State of Antisemitism Report for 2023. The figure is those bodies’ own count, compiled from their own incident database, and it counts violent incidents rather than all antisemitic incidents. The same report records 46% of those violent incidents in the United States, 48% of them committed after 7 October, and six people murdered.

33% rise in violent antisemitic incidents worldwide in 2023

The Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism reported the 33% rise together with the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency for Israel, drawing on the ministry’s own CFCA incident database. It is a party’s own count of violent incidents, not of every antisemitic incident, and it is expressed as a change against 2022 rather than as a number of events.

The same three bodies recorded 48% of the year’s violent incidents as occurring after 7 October, and reported a 1,200% increase in posts containing violent antisemitic content calling for violence against Jews, Israelis and Zionists between October and December 2023. For the first three weeks of the war, 7 to 25 October, the Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism published a separate set of increases against the same dates a year earlier, each its own count. The Community Security Trust recorded 4,103 instances of anti-Jewish hate across the United Kingdom in 2023 as first published, a 147% rise on the 1,662 it counted in 2022, and later revised that annual total to 4,296. The Anti-Defamation League counted 8,873 incidents in the United States in 2023 against 3,698 in 2022, on its own definitions. The Knesset Research and Information Centre compiled these and other national counts in its own paper and stated that the monitors count on different definitions, so the totals below are not one series and may not be summed.

On-campus incidents rose 700% after 7 October 2023

The Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, with the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency for Israel, recorded a 700% increase in on-campus incidents registered in regard to the war after 7 October 2023. The same report puts at 32.5% the share of Jewish students in the United States who felt emotionally secure on campus in that period, a survey share the report gives without field dates. It also counts adoption of a definition alongside the incidents.

The State of Antisemitism Report for 2023 publishes percentage changes, country rises and category rises, and it publishes no absolute count of antisemitic incidents worldwide for the calendar year. The Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism published a worldwide figure of 815 incidents for 2025 in a later annual brief, a separate count on a separate period. A worldwide 2023 total cannot be built by adding the national counts above.

Each national total counts on its issuing body’s own definition and reporting base: the Community Security Trust counts what is reported to it, the Anti-Defamation League counts on its own definitions, and the Austrian centre counts reports assessed against the IHRA working definition.
